When Your Body Feels Like It's No Longer Yours
You may notice your hand shaking when you reach for your coffee cup. Walking feels less steady than it used to. Your voice might sound quieter, making it harder for others to hear you. If you're living with Parkinson's disease, these physical changes can bring waves of frustration, embarrassment, and worry about what's coming next.
Many people describe feeling angry when their body won't cooperate or embarrassed when tremors make simple tasks difficult in public. You might feel sad about activities you can no longer do the same way, or anxious about becoming dependent on others. The unpredictability of symptoms can make each day feel uncertain and overwhelming.
Understanding Parkinson's Therapy
Parkinson's therapy is specialized counseling designed for people experiencing the motor and emotional challenges that come with Parkinson's disease. While Parkinson's primarily affects movement, it also impacts mood, thinking, and daily life in ways that deserve attention and support.
In our sessions, we focus on helping you adapt to changes while maintaining your sense of self and purpose. We might work on accepting the things you cannot control while finding new ways to stay engaged in meaningful activities. This could include managing anxiety about symptoms, processing grief over lost abilities, or developing communication strategies when your voice becomes softer.
Unlike general therapy, this approach specifically understands how Parkinson's affects not just your body, but your emotions, relationships, and daily routines.

My Specialized Approach to Parkinson's Support
I specialize in supporting people navigating life with neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s. As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with over 12 years of experience, I understand how Parkinson’s affects not only your body, but also your emotions, relationships, and daily routines.
My approach draws on evidence-based therapies such as Supportive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Problem-Solving Therapy (PST), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Reminiscence Therapy (RT). Depending on your needs, we might focus on reducing worry about mobility, planning around daily challenges, promoting acceptance, or enhancing mood and identity.
I also bring personal understanding from observing my mother’s experience as a long-distance caregiver for my grandmother with a neurodegenerative condition. This gives me insight into the emotional and relational impact Parkinson’s can have on both individuals and families.
What makes our work together unique:
- Therapy sessions adapted to work with fluctuating energy levels and motor symptoms
- Flexible scheduling that accommodates your best times of day
- Home visits available locally when travel becomes challenging
- A focus on both the physical and emotional aspects of Parkinson’s

You Can Still Live Meaningfully
Without emotional support, Parkinson's can feel like it's slowly taking away everything that makes life enjoyable. You might find yourself avoiding social situations, giving up hobbies you love, or feeling hopeless about the future as symptoms progress.
But with the right support, many people with Parkinson's continue to find joy, purpose, and connection even as their condition changes. You can learn to work with your symptoms rather than against them, maintain important relationships, and discover new ways to engage with life that feel meaningful and fulfilling.
The key is developing emotional resilience alongside any physical treatments you're receiving. Therapy helps you build that inner strength while providing practical strategies for daily challenges.
